Lizzo won her first Emmy for outstanding competition program for her Amazon Prime Video series, “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.”
In an emotional acceptance speech, Lizzo said, “The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me,” referring to her “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” collaborators.
“The stories that they share are not that unique. They just don’t get the platform. Telling stories, let’s tell more stories,” she added.
The “About Damn Time” singer continued, “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media — someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me… If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘You’re going to see that person, but b***h, it’s going to have to be you.’”
Lizzo dedicated the award to competitors on her reality competition series, shouting out, “This is for the big grrrls!”
“Big Grrls” follows Lizzo as she casts plus-sized women back up dancers for her upcoming tour.
