Documentary films about Billie Eilish, The Velvet Underground and more have made the shortlist for the Best Documentary Feature award at the 2022 Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the 94th Oscars ceremony on Tuesday, December 21. The 94th annual Academy Awards will be presented on March 27, 2022.
Members of the documentary branch of the academy shortlisted 15 documentaries from 138 eligible films.
The shortlist features Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, Questlove‘s Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Todd Haynes‘ The Velvet Underground, and Julie Cohen and Betsy West‘s Julia.
Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Bleary was written and directed by R.J. Cutler. The doc tells the story of the superstar’s life on the road, on stage and at home, while creating her blockbuster debut album.
The Velvet Underground, a film about the legendary underground New York rock band, was penned and directed by Todd Haynes.
Meanwhile, Summer of Soul, directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, is a documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.
