Howard University has rescinded Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ honorary degree, saying he is “no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”
The decision to revoke the recognition conferred to the rapper a decade ago was made unanimously at a meeting of the University’s board of trustees last Friday.
The board said in a statement that the university will return Combs’ $1 million contribution and terminate a $1 million pledge agreement from the Sean Combs Foundation.
A video that surfaced last month shows Combs attacking his former girlfriend, singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles.
The statement says Combs’ behavior as captured in the video dated March 5, 2016, is “so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”
“The University is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence,” it added.
Combs is also facing a probe by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s investigative wing into allegations of sex trafficking.
