Rumer Willis is “Weird Looking”

July 3rd, 2009 by Tizzy

rumerwillisDuring the Jane Report, Jane was talking about Rumer Willis’ new TV role on “90210″, and then the subject of her looks came up.  She and Tizzy think she didn’t get the best looks combination since her parents, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, are both very good looking.  Then we started thinking that maybe there’s a reason why two gorgeous celebrities may not always have beautiful kids.  What do you think?

While his family wanted to have him intured there, they were not able to obtain a residential exemption required for a burial on private property.  As of Wednesday night, the family had yet not decided on a place to hold the public memorial for Michael, but an announcement is expected soon.  It’s thought now that Jackson will be buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills but there is no confirmation of that as yet. … Read the rest of this entry »

July Book Club Selection

July 2nd, 2009 by Jane

fivequarterosoftheorange1Five Quarters of the Orange , By Joanne Harris
(Reviewed by Jane)

Many of you may have read some of Joanne Harris’ work before, or at least saw the movie based on her best-selling novel, “Chocolat”.  Really, all these two books have in common is that they’re both set in France and they weave food and recipes into the storyline.

“Five Quarters of the Orange” is set in a small village in France, during World War II, when France was occupied by the Germans.  Not a very happy time in history and a very unhappy time for the French, in particular, meaning that this isn’t a light-hearted book.  It’s told from the perspective of 9 year-old Framboise, who lives with her mother and older brother and sister, on a family farm.  Her father was killed in the war and her mother, who is quite cold and stern, suffers from debilitating migraines.  The migraine episodes are at the center of the family mystery that is the storyline of the book.  Some sort of scandal or tragedy happened to Framboise’s family and the book is her re-telling of that story, as an old woman.

I often will choose good writing, over the story or the subject matter and when I started this book, I had the feeling that this might be one of those cases.  Harris’ writing is not flowery, overblown or, what I can only refer to as ‘romancy’.  I can’t stand authors that write ‘down’ to a more adolescent level, or try to manipulate with overly emotional, cheesy settings.  But, as I got into the first chapter and into the next, although I still was drawn by her writing, I had to find out what happened to force her family to flee and abandon their farm. … Read the rest of this entry »

Tizzy’s Movie Review: “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”

July 1st, 2009 by Tizzy

20th Century FoxThe “Ice Age” gang returns in the third installment of this very funny series.  This time around, the female wooly mammoth Ellie (Queen Latifah) is pregnant with Manny’s (Ray Romano) baby.  He’s busy prepping for the little one to arrive and can’t keep an eye on the silly sloth Sid (John Leguizamo).  Because of Sid’s dumb actions, dinosaurs come into the mix and create a new adventure for the gang.

I’ve always been a fan of these movies, and this one doesn’t disappoint.  The actors do a great job with the character voices, and the animation is incredible.  The animators didn’t forget the little details like blowing hair or falling snow.  The new characters in this movie added good humor to the storyline, especially the dinosaur fighting weasel Buck (Simon Pegg), and the squirrel fighting for the acorn returns but has to decide between love or food.

This movie is definitely the scariest of the three.  Not all of the dinosaurs are ferocious, but they don’t hold back on the ones that are.  But putting that aside, the new 3-D adventure is filled with laughs and some suspense that will entertain both kids and adults.  You’ll still enjoy this one even if you haven’t seen the other two, but you may not understand the characters as well.

Who to take to this movie: anyone over the age of 5

Don’t see this movie if: you didn’t like the other two

Tizzy’s Movie Review: “Public Enemies”

July 1st, 2009 by Tizzy

publicenemiesJohnny Depp stars in this film as the notorious American gangster John Dillinger.  It takes place in the 1930s during his peak of bank robberies.  Christian Bale plays a federal agent named Melvin Purvis who is trying to hunt him down, catch him and end him for good.  For those of us who know our history, we know what happens to Dillinger, but it’s still an interesting story to see.

I have to admit that I was disappointed with this movie.  Johnny Depp did a great job, but it was way too long and quite boring at times.  There were a lot of dark, serious scenes that really slowed down the pace of the storyline.  My impression was that it would be packed with crime and lust, but it was more of a drama than an action film.

What I liked about this movie was how it truly transports you to the 1930s.  All of the costumes were fabulous, and even the minor details like facial hair and hats really told of the times and added to the characters.  It was neat to see what Chicago was like at this time and see how the country’s war on crime began.

Who to take to this movie: adults film fans who don’t mind loud gun shots and blood

Don’t see this movie if: you’re tired
