Review: 2010 Toyota Prius

November 20th, 2009 by Dom

2010priusI sent a text to a friend when I first took the Prius out for a spin (hey, it’s not illegal YET), and it said: “I’m so green!” But what’s really scoring for Toyota is the fact that the Prius not only is the most fuel-efficient hybrid on the road, they’ve improved it for 2010 with some changes that make it much better than earlier models. Here’s what I found… Read the rest of this entry »

Tizzy’s Movie Review: “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”

November 20th, 2009 by Tizzy

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENTI’m happy to say that this movie is much better than the first one in the series.  Twihards were impressed too and weren’t shy to cheer throughout the whole movie and boast about how much closer this one was to the book than the first.  I’ve never read the books, and I still enjoyed it.  So whether you’re a die hard “Twilight fan”or just fairly interested in seeing it, “New Moon” has enough action and a decent storyline for almost anyone to enjoy.

This movie starts out with Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) the vampire as boyfriend and girlfriend.  Later in the movie she discovers her best friend, Jacob (Taylor Lautner), is a werewolf and becomes torn between the two.  The conflict is not very mature, well they’re in high school, but it’s not as cheesy as the first one.

I was mostly impressed with the action sequences.  The special effects for the werewolves were cool, and the fight scenes were a nice mixture of slow motion with real time.  Bella’s pouty characteristics become annoying at times, almost enough to yell “snap out of it” at the screen, but I’m just happy that there’s much more going on in this movie than just a bunch of staring like the first one.

Who to take to this movie: “Twilight” fans and friends intrigued by the preview

Don’t see this movie if: seeing a high school romance is the last thing on your list

Tizzy’s Movie Review: “Precious”

November 20th, 2009 by Tizzy

LionsgateThis film is so powerful and heavy that it’ll leave you jaw dropped and blown away.  It’s based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire and tells the story of an illiterate 16-year-old girl in Harlem who’s pregnant with her second child and lives with an abusive mother (played by an Oscar worthy Mo’Nique).  Desperate to change her life, she seeks help from two mentors, a teacher and a welfare employee.

Everyone had excellent acting chops.  Mariah Carey plays the welfare employee, portraying a woman who puts appearance last and helping people first.  She’s come a long way since “Glitter”!  The woman who plays her teacher at the alternative school, Paula Patton, also plays an excellent mentor.  It’s the performances though by Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) and Mo’Nique that will move you the most.

This movie is only for adults.  The topics and scenes are very intense and at times make you feel a bit uncomfortable, but not enough to prevent you from enjoying it as a whole.  It’s just one of those movies that you have to see.  You won’t be disappointed.  Just make sure you’re in the right mindset before going into it.

Who to take to this movie: adults who can handle tough subjects

Don’t see this movie if: you’re in the mood to laugh

Tizzy’s Movie Review: “The Blind Side”

November 20th, 2009 by Tizzy

Warner Bros.Sandra Bullock stars in this true story movie about a family in Memphis who helps a kid in need.  She’s rich (her husband, Tim McGraw, owns a bunch of Taco Bells – yum!), and her family is very well off.  When a kid from the projects starts attending her kids’ school, she decides to take him in when he has nowhere else to go.

Turns out this kid has potential to play football, so Bullock’s family does everything in their power to make that happen.  From helping him with his grades to bringing him out of his shell, they truly change his life while he changes theirs.  The story is so incredible that it’s hard to believe at times that all of this really happened.

Bullock really stood out in this movie, but I gotta hand it to her little son.  He was the comic relief, and he scored big in my book!  His catch phrases and kind personality saved the movie from being just a drama.  This is definitely one of those feel good movies that will leave you cheering at the end.

Who to take to this movie: football fans

Don’t see this movie if: you’re not into sports

Tizzy’s Movie Review: “Planet 51”

November 20th, 2009 by Tizzy

ColumbiaThis animated movie had potential in my book, but it falls hard and flat.  It’s about an astronaut that lands on an alien planet, but all of the aliens live like humans, so they think he’s the alien.  Cute concept with a lot of wiggle room for humor, but it just never quite clicked.

Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock) is the voice of the arrogant astronaut, and with his comical success in other movies, I thought he would be the perfect fit.  The writers’ material was just too cheesy for him to pull off.  Even the way the aliens talked on their planet was lame, and it wasn’t much different from ours.

It’s rated PG, and it’s not too scary so little ones should like it.  It’s not in 3-D (unlike the majority of animated releases this year), but I don’t think that would’ve helped it.  The script was lousy, the story was too predictable and unfortunately, there’s not a lot of adult humor hidden inside for parents to enjoy too.

Who to take to this movie: little kids

Don’t see this movie if: you could care less about cartoon aliens

I am thinking about proposing to the love of my life, Sally, during Thsnkgiving dinner at her parents house.  All of her brothers, sisters, their Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles will be there.  She has NO idea I’m planning on doing this.  I think it’s very romantic, but my Dad says that I’m off my rocker.  Is proposing in front of her family during Thanksgiving dinner without her knowing romantic or just plain crazy?  -Bob

The Jane Report 11-18-09

November 18th, 2009 by Jane

Lester Cohen/WireImage.com“Twilight” star Robert Pattinson bolted on Ryan Seacrest during an interview on Seacrest’s radio show. Things were going fine until Seacrest asked him about his relationship with co-star Kristen Stewart. That’s when Pattinson’s handlers instructed him to get up out of the chair and they all split.

When “The Insider” asked “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner about the rumored romance between his co-stars, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Taylor wouldn’t comment. And he also wouldn’t say much about HIS rumored relationship with Taylor Swift. Though he did say he was flattered when she gave him a shout-out on “Saturday Night Live.” … Read the rest of this entry »
