We love to read, and we know that a lot of you do, too. So, naturally we had to create the Dom and Jane Book Club.
Each month we will pick at least one book that we really like, and invite you to try it. And, to help you out, we've partnered with our friends at all three locations of The Tattered Cover Book Store to make it easy for you. Look for the Dom and Jane Book Club shelf at The Tattered Cover, and you'll find that month's selection at 20% off!
I love southern writers and I really love southern humor writers, which is why "The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love" by Jill Connor Browne is one of my all-time favorites, and I think it's a perfect summer book.
Jill Connor Browne started the first chapter of the Sweet Potato Queens in Jackson, Mississippi, so that they could march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. There are now chapters all over the country, including Colorado. They are self-professed 'fallen southern belles', who get together, dress up in sparkly dresses and march in the parade, but the book is a series of very funny essays, about crazy stuff that happens in women's lives.
The queens are full of sass and have a very special plan for getting the men in their lives to behave, which is detailed in the book. They also really like to eat (who doesn't?) and so there are several fattening, yummy recipes sprinkled throughout the book, highlighting the four main food groups: sweet, salty, fried and au gratin. In fact, one of my favorite chapters is "What to Eat When Tragedy Strikes".
There is a whole series of Sweet Potato Queens books and this is the first one, so if you decide that you can't get enough of them, this is the place the start. Grab a copy and stick it in your beach/pool bag or just fix up a mess of margaritas and sit yourself out under a tree in the backyard and have a good laugh!
And now, during the month of June, you can pick it up today at all three locations of The Tattered Cover Book Store, for a 20% discount!

May Book Club Selection - Patricia Love & John Stosny's "How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It"
We've often said on our show, that TOO MUCH communication, can cause trouble in a marriage. Gals tend to want to talk and talk and talk and talk.......much to the frustration of men. So, when we ran across the book, How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, by Patricia Love and John Stosny, we knew it would be perfect for the Dom and Jane Book Club.
April Book Club Selection - Marcus Zusak's "The Book Thief"
Ever had one of those books that you knew about for a long time, but for some reason it took forever to get to it…and then you loved it so much you kicked yourself for waiting? That’s exactly how I felt after reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I had heard some great things, and for good reason. This is one of my favorite reads of the past few years.
March Book Club Selection - Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything"
A quick comment about a particular book probably lasted about ten seconds. That was several months ago, and to this day we still get emails asking about the book that was mentioned. When it came time to make a selection for the March edition of our book club, it was pretty obvious.
January/February Book Club Selection - David Bach's "The Automatic Millionaire"
This is probably not a book for those of you who already have knowledge about investing, etc, but for folks who need a basic book about money management and getting started on the road to taking better care of your money, this is a great place to start.
December Book Club Selection - Richard Paul Evans' "The Christmas Box"
Each year we do our best to find a suitable selection for the holiday season. This year is no different. So we picked a book that would be a warm, thought-provoking tale this time of year.

November Book Club Selection - Chris Gardener's "The Pursuit of Happyness"
You’ve seen the movie, now read the book! Kind of backwards for some of us, but we chose “The Pursuit of Happyness” by Chris Gardner for the Dom and Jane book club.
September/October Book Club - Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451"
This time we're tying in with The Big Read, a movement to get people hooked on reading again. They've selected a classic, so we're jumping on their bandwagon.
August Book Club Selection - Sara Gruen's "Water for Elephants"
I had this book on my shelf for a long time before I cracked it open. Now I'm kicking myself that I waited so long!
July Book Club Selection - Jasper Fforde's "The Eyre Affair"
Quirky, funny, and definitely for lovers of classic fiction. If you have a sharp, witty mind, you'll probably love Jasper Fforde's sense of humor, too.
